These songs about Christmas, for me, are more meaningful when I reflect on the need for celebrations at this time of year, a need that precedes Christianity by thousands of years. So many traditional cultures have important celebrations around the Winter Solstice, all of which originated to help connect us to each other, enabling us to manage the darker days and longer nights with the comforts of friends, family and song...

When I sing these songs, I try to tap into the universal message, which I primarily hear and feel rather than think through - words are secondary. In the case of Christmas carols about Jesus and/or celebrations, the message I tune into is about birth and rebirth, and the magical and powerful connection we have to creation and creativity - as parents, as artists, as researchers, as passionate skills people and labourers, and ultimately as human beings. It is what makes us human and the song is a celebration of this.

Singing about the birth of a baby, is recognizing the miracle of life and the infinite hope we experience in that moment when we sense the miraculousness of life. At this time of year, when the days are so short and the nights so long and dark, these carols are here to remind us that soon, the days will be getting longer again, and that so much life will renew again, with the chance to experience so many more miracle. If we let ourselves, there are so many chances to sense infiinte hope.

I hope these songs can help you find the peace and joy needed to manage the dark days ahead for the rest of 2021 and welcome the renewal of 2022.
